Boating has always been a task where security and personal responsibility are crucial things to clinic. Now that we're experiencing a pandemic, but the safety of you, your passengers and others around you're jeopardized at a new and unprecedented way: the novel coronavirus or COVID-19.


While many areas have permitted boating to happen throughout the ordeal, there are some new restrictions and regulations which you need to be aware of as a responsible boater. Jet Ski of Miami is here to assist you by supplying some answers to questions you might be having around coronavirus protocols when it comes to angling in Florida.


Is It Safe to Boat With Social Distancing Restrictions?

The short answer is yes, because going out to the water with your quarantine group is a really secure recreational pursuit, however you must do it together with the right steps in place. All boats on the water in Florida must keep a distance of 50' between them, for instance, to make sure that air is not shared between parties. You need to only boat with your quarantine band or "bubble;" that is, the little circle of people with whom you live and interact on a daily basis. Inviting additional relatives or friends out of your bubble to join you on a boating trip is not encouraged.


  • Stay at least 6' from other men and women who are not in your quarantine group at all times. Now is not the time to socialize with other boaters!
  • Wear a fabric face covering over your nose and mouth when in public; avoid touching or taking away the mask until you're out on the ground with your quarantine group or back in your vehicle.
  • Do not allow others to board your ship who are part of your established celebration.
  • Use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol to disinfect your hands after handling some high-touch surfaces like gate latches or gasoline pumps.
  • When you're in a position to do so, wash your hands for 20 seconds with soap and water.
  • If you or anyone in your travel party has any signs of the coronavirus like a cough, fever or malaise, stay home, contact your family doctor for a test and stay quarantined.


Who's Boating Permitted?

Boat launches in the Miami-Dade County region are available between 6 AM and 10 PM daily. Only one ship is permitted at a time on each launch and it has to be ready to go when you start launch it. Check with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service if you're wondering if there are any current closures, as restrictions have had to loosen and contract based on the severity of viral spread. If you would like to fish, then contact the refuge or hatchery you plan to see to make sure that they are open before you depart.


How Do I Maintain My Boat Clean?

It's a wise move to disinfect your boat after each trip you take inside the virus can live for hours or even days on particular surfaces in certain problems. Ensure that you use EPA-approved disinfectants to clean your boat, but make sure that you aren't using anything that would damage your boat's endings or materials.


Use bleach wipes or a solution of 60% alcohol on a clean cloth to wipe all high-touch surfaces such as grips, chair arms, buttons, controls and even the edges of your ship. Be cautious around any electronic equipment so you don't damage them. Encourage passengers to remove all of their personal possessions from the craft following the trip.
