Boating Magazine Names the Scarab 285 ID Boat of the Year 2022 Finalist

Boating's editors have tested more than 100 boats each year in almost every category. Our editors tested over 100 boats during 2022. This included PWC, 16-foot-long runabouts and cruisers, dayboats, and center console boats that exceed 50 feet in length.

We tried out gas, diesel, electric, and jet boats. We cruised at displacement speeds and topped 150 mph on water. The majority of our test pool was V-hull boats, but we also had plenty of catamarans, RIBs and a proa. This combined with nearly 200 years of experience testing boats by our editors gives the boating tech team a wealth of knowledge.

We use that experience each year to select the Boat of the Year (BOTY) award for recreational boating. Candidates must be distinguished in their chosen category or in the purpose they were created to accomplish. For example, we don't pit a sportfisher against a boat-waiter. Instead, we evaluate how a wakeboat innovates in this area if it strikes our fancy. The Boat of the Year is the boat we think stands out the most in its category.

In January, we will announce the Boat of the year winner. These five boats are the 2022 BOTY finalists. They represent excellent boats for the missions they serve. Which boat will win the title of Boat of the Year in 2019? Find out in January.

Malibu Wakesetter 21 LX

This boat combines the comfort of a pickle fork hull with traditional bow lines. It is available with two hulls. One is designed for wake-sports and the other allows water-skiing and wake-sports. Our editors also praised the G5 Tower, Integrated Surf Platform and other features.

Taiga Orca PWC

We were proud to call it the first ever electric-powered PWC. Its direct-drive is simple to use and does not suffer from the idle steering problems of forward, neutral, and reverse. The lightweight composite carbon-fiber hull maximizes efficiency.

Scarab 285

This boat is 600 horsepower, which is the highest for a jet runabout. It was quieter than other boats during our testing. The BRP engines can also be adjusted to reduce the "spin and creep", which is often seen when other jet boats are idle. Only for jetboats, custom vinyl, flooring, and gelcoat are all available.

Sea-Doo Switch

This boat can be towed with a mid-sized car and trailered with it. It is also very easy to handle and dock, making recreational boating accessible to a wider audience. The customizable interior allows owners to set it up according to their needs with removable seats or accessories.

Solace 415CS

This center-console powered by diesel has superior range and seakeeping capabilities than its outboard-powered counterpart. We compared them during a 400-mile round trip cruise to the Bahamas Out Islands. This hybrid-powered vessel can be powered by an electric motor thanks to the Volvo Penta Aquamatic system, which is jack-shafted.
